I ———— THE DAILY NEWS THE LEADING NEWSPAPER IN NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA Published Daily and Weekly by THE PRINCE RUPERT PUBLISHING CO. ne PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. DAIL ¥ “EDITION KICK AGAINST THE POST OFFICE SITE The selection of a_ site for the permanent federal build- ings in this city is not a party question but one in which all citizens interested in building up of Prince Rupert are deep- ly -interested, therefore, when we express the general opin- ion of the city that the site which the government has ex- propriated is in many ways unsuitable it cannot be con- tended that it is a mere parti- san statement. All the lead ing people yesterday interview ed on the subject, Conserva- tives, Liberals and with no pronounced political affil- jations, are of the opinion that the site chosen many objections. Tt is stated that the is to be of stone, that nity of design it is monize with the expensive public buildings to be erected by the province and by _ the railway company—the latter having planned a two million dollar hotel of the Chateau Laurier style—and that it is to cost in the neighborhood of four hundred thousand = dol- lars. Think for a moment of choosing as site for such a stately building one hundred feet by one hundred in_ the centre of a block. This re- striets the architect who de- signs it to the front elevation only, for this is all the public will be able to see of the building which they are taxed to pay for. With buildings on either side of it and the cliff closely abutting the rear, what a skimpy sample ef a public building representing the great Dominion Government it will make This is altogether outside of those questions of public ut- ility and convenience such daylight and the delivery the mails from the steamers. For most ment buildings in choosing the site a corner is invariably cho- sen that something more than the front elevation seen, and it is sought to have, as a rule, the building detach- ed on every side. Of it may be argued that the gov- ernment, at great expense, may cut an alleyway out of the front of the cliff; also that the men presents building in dig to har- as of trains and govern- 80 is course, viled to attend these —_ Saturday April 12, services: building on the one hundred : foot lot shall be only eighty Nine patterns in open stock foot square, so as to allow|dinnerware at Wallace's. 83tf ten-foot alleyways on each of - . pane eee its three sides.
