Ph, NOM ee | aa The Economizer Will Pay For the Stove It will not take long for a Gurney-Oxford range to pay for itself. The Economizer will do it. This device saves 1 ton of coal in every 6 ordinarily consumed, enabling the thrifty house- wife to have a thoroughly efficient range with exclusive features at practically no cost. The dividends represented by the lower con- sumption of fuel will pay back the original invest- ment in a very short time. Pages written about the Economizer could not tell of its real value to the household as has been proven by the most scientific tests. You owe it to yourself to investigate the Econ- omizer before concluding your purchase of your new range. There are other vital points known only in this Gurney-Oxford, such as the Divided Flue, the New Special Grate and the Broiler attachment. All these scientific improvements lead the housewife to perfection in the art of cooking. Her uniformly heated oven works with her and ives her the baking results she is striving for — ight delicious biscuits, flaky wholesome pastry and evenly baked bread. The bright and shining appearance of this stove with its nickel trimmings and polished top which requires no black lead charms the heart of every good housekeeper. She realizes that the Gurney- Oxford can fulfil here every needa. WILL IMPROVE ROADWAY TO WHARF | Several Carloads of Cinders Will) Be Added to the Gravel Top Dressing. j i The cartage and transfer men | | of the city, who have been up in arms for several days over the icondition of the new pradway that is now the only means of access to the G. T. P. wharf and freight sheds, wil! be pleased to learn that it is the intention of the Grand Trunk Pacifie local officials to put the road in the condition that the traffic re- quires. The officials state that there was considerable disap- pointment in the quality of the Skeena River gravel that has been used as a top dressing. It did not carry a sufficient quantity of clay to make it properly bind for a road. In order to make it suitable for the traffic the larger rocks are being raked out and a quantity of cinders will be spread over the gravel. It is thought that this will make a mixture that will bind and harden. [If this should fail other steps will be taken to make a road suitable for the traffic. Fort William, Ont., May 13— Fighting to keep out a wild-eyed crazy mob of miners who were struggling to rescue an impri- soned Hungarian from the police station, the local police last night shot and instantly killed Mike Smorak and badly wounded John Fulk. The fracas was the outcome of a street riot, in which a derailed street car was attacked by a crowd of sympathizers. The car, run by strike-breakers, had swer ved off the tracks, and coming to a stop at the sidewalk, was smashed by a furious crowd which had been worked up to a frenzy by the excitement which followed an early street parade and agitated mass meeting. In the midst of the uproar, the police were called out and Peter Landi, a Hungarian, was arrest- ed and hustled through the surg- ing mass to the coal docks po- lice station, a frame building, situated in the heart of the for- eign quarter. The crowd followed and as- sembled outside the station and the uproar continued, The voi- ces of scores of new arrivals se0n added to the tumilt, until about 2000 husky foreign mem- bers of the population had gath- ered, These were not only strik- ers, but sympathizers who had listened to the inflammatory ex- hortations earlier in the day, and friends of Landi, who were stir- ring up their compatriots to res- Q 5 ve been al J OF ti | i j | ie § LOCAL a L NEWS ITEMS. | WANTED—-Stationary engineer w - 4th) elas ’ Ts 5} a vally 7 —_—e apply Sox "aie 7 We close on May 24. The Seattle Post-Intellia; nee would have the Heeate Strait dic pute submitted to arbitration It says editorially: “It appears that there are prospects that the DPD minion authorities will again re vive the contention that Hecate Strait constitutes territoria waters of Canada, and that Amer ican fishermen may be denied the right to take fish anywhere in the strait. If this issue is raised, th government of the United States should be prompt to deny th: rights claimed and to have th: matter determined by a compete tribunal. It is not likely that any such contention as that advanced by Canada will be upheld by any tribunal under the rules of inter national water law, common to all of the nations of the world, outside of the three mile limit from the shore, and this not withstanding that both shores are territorial of the possessions same country.” NEW WHARF AT MASSET NEARLY COMPLETED Men Will Soon § Start Work on Bridge to Delkatiah.
