Rutland, Vt., Aug. 4.—In a poor tenement house in this city, ill and nearly blind, Princess Eleanor Gladstone Nicholas, daughter of Sir Davison, a cousin of William Ewart Glad- Alexandra James stone, was met by Dr. Mary E. Walker, the noted exponent of dress reform, who came to take the aged sufferer to a sanitarium near Oswego, N. Y. The princess slowly dying from ill caused by want. She is 80 years old. The princess nursed on the battlefield in the Civil war, and Dr. Walker was the only woman surgeon in that war. 1s Dr. Walker wore the familiar coat and trousers and her war medal from congress. When the Balkan allies were fighting against Turkey the Daily Atlantis, a Greek newspaper pub- lished in New York, started a war fund and succeeded in raising $1,200,000. When the Greeks re- cently went to war against Bul- garia the Atlantis started an- other war fund, of a million, and by this time has probably reached that sum. Its issue of July 27th showed $710,227 paid in. Last week the Greeks of this city collected and forwarded $130.50, and the steel gangs bworking on the railway added $850 to the fund. FLIES TO HIS OFFICE Chicago Millionaire Now Employs Hydro-Aeroplane. Chicago, Aug. 1.—Harold F. McCormick made a_ successful flight in his new hydro-aeroplane today from his summer residence in Lake Forest over the waters of Lake Michigan to Grant Park, Chicago, a distance of 30 miles. Mr McCormick made the trip in 28 minutes, or at a speed of more than a mile a minute. The ma- chine was driver’ by Clarence ©. Witmer. The flight was at an average height of'about sixty feet. CAMPBELL IS FINED Cyclist Who Caused Accident is Taught a Lesson. For riding on the sidewalk Daniel Campbell was fined $5 and $2 costs this morning. Campbell is the lad who knocked down George Russell of The News staff on Friday afternoon. Fortunate- ly, Mr. Russell has quite recov- ered from the accident, so Camp- bell escaped with a fine. His punishment, however, should serve as a warning to other cycl- ists to keep off the sidewalks. Robert O'Neill, who was indict- ed in the county court on the charge of theft, was honorably discharged by Judge Young on Saturday. The judge held that there was a lack of evidence to substantiate the charge. The counsel for the defence was A. M. Manson, of Williams & Manson, The counsel for the proseeution was R. I. B.
