the probable results which will

opening of the new route between

The Daily Mail, in an editorial,
says it thinks the canal will prove
a strong temptation to the United
States to create something like a
protectorate over Latin-America.
“Those who know. Latin-America
best,” the Daily Mail continues,
“are convinced it has a splendid
future, while it has both the de-

work for itself. It would be a
disaster to civilization should the
United States allow itself to come
into conflict with this right and
resolution of Latin-America.”

French Confidence in Canada.
Believing that Winnipeg was
to float a thirteen million dollar
loan this year to finance the Shoal
Lake water supply scheme, French
financiers have asked, through
the Canadian commissioner in
Paris, for the privilege of bid-
ding for all or part of it. The
loan will not be floated this year,
states a Winnipeg despatch.
