HEaD OFFICE civic ELECTION In yesterday's Pattullo has self as a candidate for re-elec- In his letter he has also News Mayor announced him- tion. outlined what has been ac- complished the council during the year. When by present we consider that practically every city in Western Canada has been at a stand. still still for the past year one be- gins to realize that in Prince , Rupert we have made wonder- ful strides. OB We are just entering upon the year of completion of the road; the year that we have all been looking forward to since the advent of the city. This will be our year of jubilee, when we are expected to lake our proper place in the life of the nation. We are sure to have among us a large number of distinugished guests (per- haps including the King him- self}, and next year’s mayor should be a man who would in every sense of the word repre- sent us before the world. The present mayor such a man and the citizens no doubt will consider this in making their choice. is uo 0 oO During his term of office Mr. Pattullo has had a_ hard He has been con- financial condi- tions that have not been as severe within the lifetime of any of us notwithstanding the fact that we have suffered nothing locally. The financiers of Europe had practically shut down on all Canadian enter- prises, and yet in spite of this the present council did more financing than the two prev- jous ones. Q 0 0 There is no man living who could step into the row to hoe. fronted with o mayor's | | , Dee. 10, 1913 a> Wednesday chair and give satisfaction to everybody. It is really a sign of strength when one refuses to gain popularity by pleasing the crowd. Mr. PattulJo has worked hard and disinterest- edly for the city’s welfare. He was elected by a fusion of pol- itical forces and not once dur- ing the vear was it ever hinted that he had condescended to play the political game. Prince Rupert has been cursed by polities in the past and it is to be hoped that we have seen the last of the days when the issue at civic el@éctions had a_ party tinge. 0 o oO Prinee Rupert has become famous for crucifying her public servants. This is per- haps one of the indications of our youth. We are now about to attain our majority and let us act like men. Let us refuse to condemn a man because of insinuations that no man will dare assert. Let us not be dictated by the agitators who are always wanting a change, but let us do our own thinking and reward = virtue where we find it. to THE FIGHTING SPIRIT OF LIBERALISM Liberalism throughout the Dominion is in fighting spirit. In Ontario, Manitoba and Brit- ish Columbia, where Conserva- tive governments are strongly entrenched, nothing being allowed to go by default. Bye- elections are being strenuously fought, not so much in consid- eration of the prospect of im- mediate victory as of the opportunity to arouse and educate the people. Courage and a fighting spirit of the kind now being displayed by the Liberal party in every sec- tion of the Dominion will not have long to await the day of victory.-— Edmonton seeing complete Capital.
