M. 8. Bristol, the smallest British war- ship in the North Atlantic, fought a long range duel with the Karis- ruh, the largest and fastest of the German cruisers which was try- ing to intercept British shipping in the North Atlantic. The Bris- tol intercepted the Karisruh when |she was coaling at sea from the North German Lioyd steamer, Kron Priz Wilhelm. The German cruiser intercepted by the Bris- tol and a half hour long-range running fight took place in the blackness of the semi-tropical night. The ships were racing through a heavy swell at a terri- fic clip. They exchanged broad- sides without inflicting much | Gamage, the conditions being very unfavourable for accurate gun- nery. Although the Bristol’s consort was fully one hundred miles astern, the German ship would not stand and fight. She altered her course gradually and drew away from the Bristol going at a superior speed. In half an hour she was out of range of the British ship’s six inch bowchaser.. All through the night the chase lasted, but some- where in the darkness the Ger- man doubled and made off to San Juan where she put in for coal several days ago. Details were brought to Hali- fax by the Suffolk agship, with Craddock commanding the fourth cruiser squadron. EXPECT TO BENEFIT Increase in Travel Is Looked For by Nippon Lines—Wil!l Benefit at Other’s Expense Victoria, August 14.—All Jap- anese lines expect to reap a rich harvest at the expense of the other transportation companies whose services have become more or less demoralized sinee the de- claration of war by England against Germany. Now that the services of other lines on the Pacific have been partially disrupted by the char- ter of vessels for naval service, representatives of the Japanese lines are looking for a big in- in passenger and also freight business. crease In the passenger business the Japanese lines have practically a free hand, as the C. P. R. service has been completely upset by the eharter of the Empress of Asia Empress of Russia and Empress of Japan for Government s-rvice on the other side of the Pacific. Much of the trans-Pacille pas. senger travel that was formerly handled by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha and the Osaka Shosen Kaisha was diverted to C. P. R. ¢hannels following the advent of the newer Empresses, With the larger Empresses temporarily out of commission: it jis expected that this business, j bo ith European and Oriental, for ia time at any rate, will revert back to the Japanese lines, Pas- senger travel by the Japanese lines has fallen off woefully of late. From tlow on the agents of the Japanese companies expect the bookings to materially in- crease, LORD ROBERTS WILL BE COLGRES.-U8-GINEG (Special to THE NEWS) London, August 14.--The King has appointed Lord Roberts to be Colonel-in-Chief of all the jOverseas forces which may come {to England, FOR RENT COMPLETELY FURNISHED (WITH PIANO) FIVE ROOMED APART- MENT; HOT WATER HEAT; moD- CLOSE IN; RENT VERY REASONABLE; VACANT SEPT 18T | ERN; } TER & COLLAR oe THIRD AVENUE 12k AS CAN BE WE HAVE JUST INSTALLED BATHS SYSTEM AND ARE AS GOOD A SERVI THE LARGE KISH BATHS \ FIRST CLASS TURKISH READY TO GIVE THE PUBLIC HAD IN Crribs EMPIRE BATHS
