SEATTLE—Puget Sound News Co. o> ENGLAND—The Clougher Syndicate, Grand Trunk Building, Trafalgar are. ae A CALL TO DUTY DalILy EDITION. TUESDAY, May 380 It is with feelings of impatience that the people of Prince Rupert are viewing the bickerings and squabbles at the Council Board. In the case of a couple of the abler business men on the council, the bored expressions on their faces last night as they listened to their colleagues’ wearisome chatter, showed that they felt along with the citizens that the entertainment part of the’ proceedings was being overworked. There is a joke being passed round town that the council has done nothing but appoint a rat-catcher. The statement is not intended to be taken literally, but the jocular and exaggerated criticism is an indication of the public temper. Frankly and kindly stated, it is time the council took itself seriously and got down to business. This is more made urgent by the news received»yesterday that Mr. C. M. Hays and a. number of his subordinates on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway are to visit here in a week's time in connection with the Grand Trunk assessment question. Upon this most important question, the Mayor has made no attempt to enlighten the people, though invited to do so. It looks as if the people are to be asked to cast a blind-fold vote on the question. If this is an intentional policy, it is little short of criminal on the part of any man who is sworn to protect the interests of thecitizens. It is as much criminal, as for the keeper of a railway-crossing to allow men and women to walk in the dark in front of a fast moving engine. In the face of the contemplated settlement, binding the city for a long term of years, it is in the nature of treason to spend valuable hours in such wearisome and futile squabbles as that which wasted the time of the council last night. Sealed tenders addressed to the undersigned and endorsed Tender for Public Building, Cran- brook, B. WHEN DECENCY IS OUTRAGED “Tis an unclean bird that fouls its own nest” is probably the sentiment which will rise in the minds of most citizens of Prince Rupert when they read the Prince Rupert article on another page of this issue. No one has any desire to limit the freedom of any man to express his opinions, no matter how much they may differ from those held by the general multitude. But there is a limit to be observed if not by the bounds of law, then by the bounds of honesty and good taste. There is an amazing lack of civic patriotism in the action of any man who after concocting a screed so slanderous and so dishonest that no self-respecting editor north of the forty-ninth parallel would publish it, would send the article to a foreign country to be published, and circulated. While local feeling is likely to be aroused by the offensive and untruthful suggestion conveyed by the article that Prince Rupert is a breeding-place for traitors and malcontents, the greater injury— the more cowardly injury—is that inflicted upon those whose position precludes them from retaliation or defence. it “ay ee containing 112 acres Dai ated Apri i 1911, CLARA MAY LITTLE Pub. But in the constitution of government to to anply. to for permission to purchase the following which all of us, including Doyle 322 have subscribed and look to for protection, the king has a useful though somewhat prosaic work to perform. On the whole, it is doubtful whether the lot of a king is as desirable as that of a member of the P. R. I. A. But at least the single fact that he is born to a position and responsibility which for reasons of state he may not repudiate, should save him from the cowardly and insulting epithet of the man who is devoid of a sense of national loyalty. King:baiting is the poorest and cheapest form of sport. There is nothing in the article save the assumption of manner and the quoting of his membership number to show that the writer was writing on behalf of the local association. It would be a timely and a proper thing, and would go a long way to re-establish good feelings between the men’s organisation and the citizens at large, if the Prince Rupert Industrial Association, either from a sense of national or civic patriotism, were to officially repudiate the article. CONDITIONS NOW AT STEAMBOAT Development of the New Min- ing District Progresses The day is passed when the prospector can locate in the Steam- boat camp. Prospectors are going in on to Lingtning Creek over the border, and to the headwaters of the Skagit to find open ground. Good ore is shown all the way from the 14-Mile to the boundary, about forty-five miles, and every day brings reports extending the strike. The trail from Hope to Steam- boat is at present good and easily accessible, but owing to the great railfall during the last few days it is somewhat mushy, without any inconvenience and certainly without any danger. As a matter of fact some six or seven ladies have walked from Hope to Steam- boat, looking as lovely as when they started. There are about eighty men working in Steamboat and word has been received from Mr. Thom- as, of Messrs. Rourke & Thomas, that their business is flourishing, and another consignment of a few thousand pounds of goods for their general store has been shipped. Messrs. Raymond & Melntyre’s hotel is opened, and the second hotel is being built, will. be open for business in the course of a week or ten days, The barber shop is doing good business, Other stores will be opened within a few days, and it is the general opinion that in the course of the next two weeks there will be some three or four hundred people in Steamboat City.
