4 MERRY DANCE OTTAWA HONORS LAST NIGHT Dainty New Hall Opened for Assemblies on Second Avenue Party of Young ‘‘Old-timers”’ Gave It Send Off. In the nature of a ‘“House- warming’’ was the extremely pretty dance held last night in a new dainty hali just opened on Second avenue. A happy party of some of the young pioneers of Prince Rupert (so young that to call them “old-timers” though true, is not properly descriptive) met to give the hall its send-off with a real live dance. The spirit of the merry old-time dances held in Prince Rupert before the pop- ulation attained its thousand mark, prevailed to the limit, and two- step, waltz, lancers, and the pretty minuet went with glorious swing and verve. The floor is of the smoothest, the hall with its soft electric glow lamps, delicately pret- ty decorations, and assembly of raidantly merry dancers circling to music full of melody and memories, looked a perfect picture framed by the strong square arch- way of a cosy smoke-room. Ap- petising refreshments were served during the intervals; the music by Professor Kauffmann gave every pleasure; and the end of the dance as dawn began to break came quite too soon, The new hall which has just been opened is associated with the name of a popular lady in the city, and is certain to be the scene of many pleasant gatherings in future. Douglas Defends Citizens’ Right to Disposal of Refuse Themselves if They Choose to Do So. Considerable discussion was used at the council meeting last night when the City Scavenging By-law came before the Committee of the Whole. It passed that stage all right and will likely go through the last stages of completion next Monday night. Alderman Douglas watched its passage very carefully. He wanted to know if people’s’ privilege to remove their own garbage would be taken away by the by-law. Then Alderman Ketr asked if a storekeeper could take away garbage from his store without calling in the contractor. These crimps were finally str- aightened out by granting a store- keeper or householder the right to remove his garbage, but he THE DAILY NEWS ——— — ~ eee “The News” ——— ot Ta OO Ht Ht —— — — THEY ~Jj The Insurance People EVERY CLASS OF INSURANCE.
