But in the end the truth is made clear. The youth is exonerated, the erring wife forgiven, and her heart set at rest. The play—rather an ambitious one for a repertoire company to attempt on its first night in Prince Rupert—was given last night by the May Roberts Com- pany in the; Empress Theatre. Miss Roberts took the part of the distrait Marie Willoby, “‘the thief,”’ and gave a very creditable performance. In the second act, by far the strongest in the piece, both she and Mr. L. Victor Gil- lard as the husband played with great intensity and strength. The unmasking of the wife’s crime by the steady questioning of the husband, the woman's pathetic efforts to turn the subject, and the horror of the final exposure were splendidly portrayed, and won spontaneous appluase. The sup- port was quite good, and the piece well staged. Miss Roberts’ gowns came in for a great deal of at- tention from the ladies of the audience. During the final “wait,’’ Mr. Gillard pleased the audience with a fine rendition of Service’s dra- matic poem “The Killing of Dan McGrew,” and Mr. Ira Robertson brought down the house with a capital comic song and humorous monologue. The company will put on the pretty comedy ‘The Marriage of Kitty" tonight. ; ” Likes Rupert Mr. Richard S. Ford, managing director of the Vancouver ‘‘Sat- urday Sunset’’ was a caller at the Daily News office yesterday. He is paying a flying visit up the coast as far as Skagway in company with Mr. W. Phillips of Mel- bourne, Australia. Both gentle- men were much impressed with the scenic beauties of the sur- rounding country, and the progress in city-making they saw in Prince Rupert. The alleged report of explosion of two Ross rifles furnished the Queen’s Own was not due to any defect in the rifle, but the fact that the rifles after delivery were hand- ed over to another company to be tted with a special sight. In fitting the sight the barrels were tapped to admit a screw, instead of soldering on the barrel as in the Lee Enfield, or with rings as with the regular ‘‘Ross”’ sights to hold the rear of the back sight in place; this weakened the barrel and caused it to explode. When this was realized all the rifles which had been thus» wrongly treated were, of course, ordered to’ be withdrawn. { Judge Young returned from the south this morning. Have you learned that ‘‘keeping boarders”’ is a business matter— and that it involves timely ad- vertising in the classified columns of The News? THE DAILY NEWS —— - RUPERT’S FIRST LEAGUE GAME (Continued from page one) felt hat and armed with a huge megaphone created immense amuse ment by his unsparing advice and criticism howled in roof lifting style. When Jerry Miller ‘‘stole the diamond” this enthusiast flung down his hat and danced on it to the: vast joy of the multitude. Rupert's Rosebuds Particularly encouraging to the players was the Grand Stand of a fetching se- lection of Prince Rupert's prettiest rosebuds. The girls responded splendidly to invitation to spur on the live boys of Prince Rupert to the athletic prowess for which our city is certainly to become famous. All through the evening's play it was impos- sible not to see in that spirited indoor game, the forecast of the coming out door game played with the same splendid enthu- siasm on a spacious new Athletic Park.’ To watch the swift move- ments of the young players on the floor last night was to see in imagination the sun-bathed dia- mond sutrounded by the thronged stands, to hear the click of bat against ball, to watch the pitcher’s wonderful ‘“‘wind-up,’’ and _ listen to the thunder of a_ thousand enthusiastic threats cheering a Prince Rupert home-team on to victory over Vancouver. Stay with it boys and we'll have that park next summer. FORT GEORGE IS NOW “DRY” The Hotel Northern the Only Hotel in the District, Goes up in Flames. presence on the Fort George, July 25.—The to- tal destruction by ‘fire of- the Hotel Northern at South Fort George last Saturday morning has made the district ‘‘dry’”’ as far as licensed premises are concerned, and it is altogether improbable that another license will be granted this year. With the burning of Hotel Northern the liquor license granted by the provincial govern- ment lapsed. Before a new license can be granted all the require- ments of the liquor act must be complied with, and as this would mean the erection of a building with large public accommodations it is scarcely possible that such a structure could. be _ provided within year even the parties interested so inclined. Johnson & Burns, proprietors of Hotel Northern, suffered over $20,000 in the destruction of their property. a were loss S.S. PRINCE JOHN ARRIVES New G. T. P. Steamer for Island Trip will be in Vancouver Tomorrow. Word was received at the office of the Grand Trunk Pacific yes- terday that their’ new steamer, the Prince John, would arrive in Vancouver Thursday. The cap- tain gave his position early yes- terday as abreast of San Diego, giving the first information by wireless of her position since her departure from England. The vessel is sailing at the rate of between ten and twelve knots. The steamer will be in Prince Rupert within a few days of her arrival at Vancouver.
