Re ¥ BRITAIN UNITED AGAINST HER FOES r year, in advance. per year; Weekly, Contract rates DatLy EDITION. Three days ago, the British despatches told of riots in the British House of Commons. Fists were shaken by honorable gentlemen in the faces of other honorable gentlemen. For the first time in history a British Prime Minister was howled down by an Opposition for the first time in his career, the Speaker of the House had occasion to use his prerogative to adjourn the House on his own responsibility, to avoid disorders. . Yesterday the despatches told of another state of affairs. They told of a House that was of one mind. They told of a Premier reading from a manuscript a speech of grave import, and being followed by the Leader of the Opposition who endorsed all the Premier said. There was not a dissentient voice in the House. It was a thrilling anii- climax to the scenes of the previous days. The explanation is simple. The question which rent the House to a point where indignities were plentiful, was a domestic one. The question of the shearing of the power of the House of Lords, deeply affecting the future of the British people, was confined to the British people. Marked differences were permissible. The question of resenting German aggression in Morocco is dif- ferent. It may be that the ordinary British subject is less affected by final result of German intrusion in Morocco than in the passage of the Peers] Veto Bill in its original form; it may ke that the lesser feelings are swallowed up in the revival of old hates; the fact that Britain is ready to sink all differences in the face of German aggres- sion is very significant. Outsiders are apt to misjudge the temper of the British people, to fear lest their free opinions, their domestic strife and lack of flag- waving mania, betokens a loose drawn tie of loyalty. Such need reminding that the loose felt ties are strongest, that freedom of speech breeds, patriotism not disloyalty, notwithstanding that liberty sometimes is interpreted as license. The spectacle of British Parliament changed in the twinkling of an eye from a scene of domestic strife to a scene of unity in defence of Britain’s honor, will not be lost on the world at large. CANADA'S GREAT WHEAT CROP Last year out of the total three and a half billions of wheat pro duced in the world Canada grew practically one hundred and fifty million bushels. The exact figures were 149,990,000 bushels. She was seventh on the list of wheat producing countries of the world, the order of precedence being: Russia, United States,British India France, Hungary, Italy and Canada. This year if the crop estimates are realised, Canada will spring to fourth place in the list of wheat producing countries, coming in behind Russia, United States and India. In view of the great rapidity of the increase of the wheat crop in Canada, it is obvious that our statesmen should be looking out for entrance to the world’s markets. To continue to pour our increas- ing crop into the British market, will break the price of wheat: This while a good thing for the British wheat consumers would not be a good thing for the Canadian wheat growers. Yet, the gentleman who aspires to become the next Premier of Canada, Mr. R. L. Borden, has just finished a tour of the wheat growing provinces telling the wheat raisers that he intends if returned to power to make it impossible for the wheat growers to sell their crop in the nearest contiguous market. And he hopes to be supported by the dwellers on the prairies. This, as the Manitoba Free Press remarks, may be magnificent, but it is not politics. NOTES DUE The British papers announce the forthcoming marriage of Lord Kitchener to a Miss Hearsay. Now watch the papers for the suc- cession of comic editors who will each sagely remark in turn that‘‘it is only a matter of Hearsay. Some of the papers take the trouble to remark that the bride- to-be is younger than her distinguished fiance. Let us hope so. Lord Kitchener is going on for sixty. Why is it that for the past fifteen years the world has been inter- ested in every rumor of marriage for the hero of Khartoum. | Is it. evi- dence of a latent consciousness that marriage is another form of war- The Continental Trust Co., Lid.
