Fishery Expert Fears Depletion of Halibut Excessive Summer Fishing may have bad effect; ! Looks to Experts Commission for Help i PLEASED WITH SKEENA RECORD J. P. Babcock thinks most salmon running this year are five year olds as they are large "As far as the halibut are concerned it does not make any difference to the race whether you calch them in the .summer or in the winter but il i j ccrtainly'a step in tjhe right direction that cannot do any possible harm and may, as some advocates in- isist, be or material benerit lo the future of Ihe- fishing" slated J. jp. Habcock, assistant provincial commissioner of fisheries, who is in me ciiy on a regular lour oi, inspection, in repiy io a query by The News. Mr. Habcock stated that he was greatly pleased that the United Stales and Canada had reached ail agreement on Ihe halibut treaty but did not at-. lacb much importance lo Ihe provisions of the treaty that Ihey will he of beneilt lo the; halibut, as the halibut does not' propagate until it is eleven years old. - . Wore Summer Fishing. The treaty provided for a clos ed period during the winter when Ihe calch would consequently be curtailed but il would mean a probable increase in Ihe catch during the summer. Mr. Han cock considered the boats would undoubtedly make an elfort lo calch more llsh in the summer lo be put inlo cold storage for Ihe winter supply. Investigations in Ihe interests of the halibut tisheries had shown thai a considerable proportion of Ihe their numbers. Asked how Ion the halibut lived. Mr. Habcock lid he did not know, but tie knew the llsh did nol propagate until 'attaining eleven years of existence. It had been proposed by the authorities lo appoint two Canadian members and two American members as a commission lo be empowered to investigate Ihe halibut tisheries question, and give suggestions lo lhe U.S. and Canadian governine'nls in connection with future llshing regulations. Mr. Habcock was under (he impression lhat the appointment of lhe Canadian members lo the commission would lake place in the near fu ture. General Situation. Mr. Habcock is looking Into the llshing industry al Smith s Inlet and on the Skeena and Naas rivers in order lo keep in touch with Ihe situation. Instead of. going over the waters in launch, as in the past, he has been given permission to use one of the llshery patrol seaplanes stationed hero. He had been by plane to the Skeena river yesterday, and found conditions very satisfactory. The most pleasing feature of lhe trip was the Tact that nineteen bonis llshing outside last night averaged 270 sockeye lo lhe boal, which is one of the largest records for a good many years past. The pack, up lo lasl, Friday, when lhe closed season began, was most satis factory, and Ihe calch reported yesterday would indicate that lhe Skeena might approach its record catch for the season. Mr. Habcock also saw Ihe records kepi by lhe llsheries inspector at Port Bssinglou, which indicated lhat the llsh are unusually large, presumably from their size year-old llsh.
