published across the borders. They
have been discussing form

dent Taft and his administration
is in power, for four years, whether
the people consider him com-
petent or not. He brings forward
a measure that is considered favor-
able by his own party to the people
of another country, and detrimen-
tal to the interests of the ‘‘trusts
and combines’ of the United
Staces; but he uses a “‘big stick”’
on the House of Representatives
and the Senate, and through it
goes, despite the ‘‘moneyed in-
terests and to the great joy of the
consumer.”
Homeland Policy

We, knowing that reciprocity, as
given in the measure now before
the people, is all in favor of the
producers and farmers and for
the great benefit of our con-
sumers, say to the people of
Canada: “It is for you to say
whether your representatives shall
deal with a friendly nation in the
necessary for food and
use. Our Mother Country has
‘free trade’ with all nations, and
is prospering, shall you do like-
wise?”’

We are in a better position than
the United States, with our res-
ponsible government and just laws.
In fact, we are better off than
the people of England, Ireland or
Scotland. If there has been any
talk of ‘‘annexation,’’ where did
it come from? Surely, cheaper
food does not mean that we must

dispense with our own ‘“‘inde-
pendence?” From 1854 to 1866
we had reciprocity in natural

products, with the United States,
after Great Britain abolished pref-
erential duties on eighty Canadian
products and ieft Canadian trade
depressed. It lasted twelve years,
was terminated by the United
States, and all because the benefits
were twenty to one in favor of
Canada. In 1869 Hon. John Rose
went to Washington—sent there,
mind you, by the Conservative
government—and offered ‘‘com-
plete reciprocity.’’ In 1879 the
Macdonald government-——Conser-
vative again—offered ‘‘reciprocity
in natural products with the United

States.” In 1887 Sir Charles
Tupper—again a Conservative—
made “an unrestricted offer of
reciprocity.

In 1898, the Laurier government
offered reciprocity in natural pro-
ducts. The United States wanted
a treaty that would cover certain
manufactures. The Liberal gov-
ernment rightly turned down the
offer and further negotiations.

In 1911, President Taft invited
the Liberai government to Wash-

“trusts and combines of the United
States and Canada providing the
sinews of war to defeat a measure

classes?’’ In our business dealings,
we buy in the cheapest and best
market and sell where we obtain
the best prices.
Annexation Bogy

The bogy called ‘‘annexation,”
is so trivial that fair-minded men
look on it with a smile on their
faces. We all know that the
United States is perfectly satisfied
to have a neighbor building up
from the farmers and workingmen
of their shores—men and women
who appreciate our government
and desire to live under it. If
Canada desired to have any change,
would she not talk “independence”
rather than annexation? Still we
do not hear of one word why we
should either be “independent”
or throw ouseleves into “‘the arms
of the United States.’ We are a
progressive people, who desire to
do our own business, in a business
way. The United States desires
to remove the ‘‘tariff wall and deal
with us, giving what we desire
most, without restriction, and ac-
cepting what we have to dispose
of."". Why should we pay more
for what we require to eat, to
drink and to use otherwise, than
it is worth, just to suit parties
who have kept up prices, on
account of the tariff? It is an
assured fact, that the Liberal
government would not make a
treaty that meant the loss of
prestige after so many years in
office and with an election facing
them. The people think and read.
They know Conservative rule
as always meant trouble. Prince
Rupert and the neighborhood has
a great many natural products
to dispose of, to the highest
bidders and will need many of
the articles covered now by an
almost prohibitive tariff.
Pilot is Straight
Conservative cry is simply
a subterfuge, without tittle
of evidence to back it up. We
have had a good, clean, honest
man at the wheel of the ship of
state. In his declining years, it
is his ambition to do all in his
power to aid the people who have
stood by and with him. Prince
Rupert owes him a debt of grati-
tude for the railway now under
construction. On his recent visit,
all parties and conditions of men
acknowledged that Sir Wilfrid
Laurier viewed the grand work of
his administration, in the building
up of a new city, with the opening
up of thousands of miles of ter-
ritory, and the expansion of the
vast Dominion. If reciprocity was
necessary, as shown by the actions
of both parties, in the years that
have passed away, it is doubly
necessary now. The tariff wall
‘made the poor man poorer, and
the rich man richer."’ Let us tear
it down, on the 21st, and scatter
the debris so that even the op-
ponents will find that clear which
they know, right down in their
hearts, has been a detriment to
the development of the country.
